The WONDERfools Teaser Review: Park Eun Bin, Cha Eun Woo Lead Quirky Superhero Comedy Adventure Series
The teaser for Netflix's new superhero comedy series - The WONDERfools - has been released. Featured stars include Park Eun Bin and Cha Eun Woo, giving it a notable cast that demonstrates Netflix's effort to enter into a different realm (one that offers audiences something new, entertaining, and less serious in terms of both television and film) with regard to superhero shows/movies. As you will see in the teaser, this will not be your typical dark type superhero film; it contains humor through joke use, and thus should be enjoyable/funny.
Storyline
The WONDERfools will take place at the end of 1999, when everyone is afraid of Y2K and the apocalypse, and follows four ordinary friends, who suddenly find out they can do things that are literally superhuman: Eun Chae Ni (Park Eun Bin) can teleport from one place to another, and Lee Woon Jung (Cha Eun Woo) can control things with his mind (telekinesis). Other members of the group include, Son Kyung Hoon and Kang Robin. Each of the members of the group has a unique and bizarre superpower. They initially view their new powers as fun and amusing until their city (Haeseong) begins to face greater threats. It's at this point that they start to become an unlikely group of heroes who will protect their neighbourhood without really comprehending the importance of their powers.
Positive Points
The series' strengths lie in having unique and original ideas. The combination of Comedic and Action Adventure/Superhero has provided a new take on the typical comedic superhero series. The strong chemistry between the two leads (portrayed by Park Eun Bin and Cha Eun Woo) will lead to an enjoyable viewing experience and based on the teaser trailer, many people feel the chemistry alone adds to the charm of the show. The setting of the story includes the 1990's & Y2K (which is nostalgic for many), which adds to the whole experience. The fact that the characters are simply written (which will allow for the audience to relate to them) and they have such a strong friendship with each other, makes it even better to watch.
Negative Points
While there are many positive aspects to this show, there are also some aspects that leave a lot to be desired. Some elements in the trailer aren’t quite enough to clarify things (like how individuals acquire their powers and their strength) making some people feel like they don’t get a full picture. Because this comedy series focuses mainly on humor, there may be limited opportunities for true emotion during tense situations. Some characters will have very weak/underwhelming skills (like the “useless flypaper” ability), which does not seem like it will help move the storyline along.
Overall: The WONDERfools is an amusing, entertaining, comedic and heroic series designed primarily for fun; therefore, the audience who enjoys watching comical interpretations of superheroes will likely be drawn to the content rather than those who enjoy serious, darker, action-oriented portrayals of them. The series will be humorous and entertaining to watch, and will feature , Comedy, Friendship and Adventure. The series is scheduled to premiere on May 15, 2026.
