With the film Clayface, the DC Universe will take on an even creepier and darker tone under James Gunn's direction than we've ever seen before by focusing on body horror. The recently released teaser and official poster give fans a very small glimpse of what appears to be an intensely grotesque and horrific story. The film's protagonist is a shape-shifting villain who will be portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries through an enterprise out of his control.

Storyline

After an unprovoked attack from organized crime leaves a promising actor permanently disfigured, he partners with a scientist (played by Naomi Ackie) to recover his identity and career.  However, what initially seemed to be a miracle drug soon becomes a horrific transformation as he is turned into a blue/cushing-like creature capable of almost any shape. As the main character continues to transform, he will begin to lose all control of his new-found abilities as he grapples with losing his identity. The teaser shows the physical horror of his transformation as well as the psychological destruction due to the transformation, which is what you can expect to see throughout the film.

Positive Points

What will capture its audience? How unique this film is; this film is a body horror film and therefore a different take on superhero films. It is visually stimulating with an all-around atmosphere. The trailer has successfully drawn an audience attention. The film features Tom Rhys Harries in the main character’s role. Tom adjusts his portrayal to communicate both thrat to and vulnerability with his character. His director, James Watkins, is an established credible director with an extensive resume (film Speak No Evil); thus, helping to establish that this film will be "horror" in nature. In addition, the film offers great character development, much like what was demonstrated in the animated series of Batman.

Negative Points

There are lots of terrible themes in the movie that would make someone who likes action-based superhero movies dislike it. Not much is shown in the trailer, and thus there will most likely be a lot of confusion over what is really happening; and if the movie isn't made well it could reduce character depth because of the negative mood of the movie; and those audience members who don't already know the character through comic books will have an even harder time understanding the plot of the movie.

Conclusion: The addition of Clayface into the new DC Universe cutout that is expanding under the direction of James Gunn appears to be an avant/experimental addition, combining elements of psychosexual horror with a tragic and unique point of view in order to create an experience outside the norm of other comic book movies. The film is scheduled for release on 10/23/2022. Due to these elements, Clayface will undoubtedly prove to be an opportunity for people to experience something other than a typical comic book movie through a good and unsettling way to experience Clayface.
