The excitement for the new Netflix Young Adult Horror series, titled "If Wishes Could Kill" is creating a huge buzz from their shocking story line. A young adult user of an application makes a wish; then, within 24 hours, gets murdered in a bizarre and crazy way. The app itself is suspenseful with an element of the supernatural; it is also a young adult drama. Therefore, this will be an entertaining series from beginning to end!

Plot Overview

At the beginning of the plot, there are five characters who come together at Seorin High: Yoo Se-ah is an ambitious high school student who excels in her studies; Kim Geon-woo is Se-ah’s best friend and also has feelings for her; Lim Na-ri, Choi Hyun-wook and Kang Ha-joon are all classmates. Their lives are going great when Hyun-wook comes out with an app named Girigo that he talks about being able to wish for something and that his wish has come true.

Initially, his friends don't believe that anything he says really occurred prior to the hour countdown timer on his phone; however, as soon as they see the timer and the countdown, they start to feel like maybe Hyun-wook is telling the truth about everything. As the countdown timer gets closer to zero, Hyun-wook starts acting more erratically, and the events continue to fall apart. When Hyun-wook made his wish the same time as Geon-woo made an arbitrary wish through the app, this too had negative consequences for Geon-woo when he finds himself at risk because of his wish. As there is some time remaining before the conclusion of the story, the characters in the series find out that their apparent friendship is actually a curse that can result in death.

Positive Points

The originality of the story can be seen clearly in the wish granting app and its link to an eventual death. This type of concept creates an immediate sense of suspense. The chemistry displayed by the young cast is believable (especially Jeon So-young as Yoo Se-ah). The chemistry of the cast helps to add an emotional component to this entire story. Additionally, the background music and the moments of excitement create a very creepy atmosphere.

Negative Points

The level of horror evident in this initial episode is less than desired. There are times during the viewing of this show where the drama of the characters in high school takes precedence over the tension created by the horror. As well, there are times where the jump-scare moments seem a little forced – not as scary as they could have been. There are some moments throughout the show where the pacing is somewhat slow.

Overall: If Wishes Could Kill begins with a strong, suspenseful first episode that features numerous mysteries about friendships and supernatural danger rather than relying solely on gore. This series will appeal to those who enjoy dark young adult thrillers such as Death Note set in a Korean high school setting.
