There’s been some major hype around the new Spider-Man trailer, particularly for all the new Marvel characters and potential surprise cameos included in the film. The return of Tom Holland as Spider-Man gives the impression that after the big multiverse Avengers crossover in No Way Home, that Spider-Man will return more to his street-level heroics in New York. That being said, there is one particular sequence within the trailer that has fans believing that there is still something very big coming from Marvel.

Storyline

The trailer hints at new experiences and a huge new threat to Peter Parker including what looks to be from Marvel comic history an organization known as The Hand who are killer ninjas. Unlike No Way Home which was solely focused on the massive multiverse destruction of Peter’s life, Brand New Day appears to be focused much more directly on Peter’s own struggles as well as how he deals with and serves as a street level hero in New York City. There also appear to be some allusions to possible darker themes in the film including body horror linked to Peter’s DNA mutation. Fan theories abound in pretending that Andrew Garfield will be appearing in this film, but Andrew himself has put those theories to rest with his ambiguous answer to not ruin people’s anticipation of the surprise cameo, but his response has kept the buzz around this movie alive.

Positive Points

The grounded approach of the trailer is probably one of its strongest assets as it shows a departure from big-Scale Multiverse Storytelling. The maturity of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in regards to his personal stakes and his protection of his city is also evident. The trailer’s action sequences seem slick and choreographed particularly the ending scene which is the source of many fan-based theories; possibly featuring street-level teams with heroes like Daredevil brings an added layer of intrigue without taking anything away from the narrative arc. The darker tone and indications of possible psychological conflicts also hint at a more complex storyline.

Negative Points

The ambiguity behind the trailer may also have opposite effects on it however. The popular ending scene is one that could have many people thinking it will deliver something to live up to or come to the rescue of the film, especially if there is no huge character cameo present. Those expecting another multiverse spectacle will likely feel let down if the story does not follow the same path as the previous movie (i.e. No Way Home). Fans have expressed interest in the use of DNA mutation as a plot point, but the failure to properly follow through on this plot device may serve either as a major plot twist or as forgotten subplot which appears underdeveloped.

Verdict: Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to offer a more personal background to the story and the characters involved; this could provide for an interesting direction for the franchise. While there is still speculation surrounding hidden character appearances in Spider-Man: Brand New Day only time will tell how fans react to the film’s ability to balance the need for fans to have their expectations met whilst still providing a reasonable story.
