Chand Mera Dil Review: Lakshya Impresses But Slow Storytelling Makes This Gen-Z Romance Emotionally Exhausting
A number of the actors in Bollywood are now utilizing dating applications to find love, but most of the time, breakups are treated very casually by the media (often young couples posting on social media right after each date); however, Chand Mera Dil takes the subject of modern romance much more seriously, as far as how people interact in the contemporary world. The film, directed by Vivek Soni, looks at the beauty and the chaos of love, as well as the difficulties a young couple, Lakshya, and Ananya Panday have in having a successful relationship.
Storyline
Aarav meets Chandni while in college in Hyderabad, India. From the minute Aarav's eyes start to fall on Chandni, he has fallen head over heels in love; there are also times where Chandni is intrigued by Aarav's handsomeness and his focus toward her, as they both continue to fall deeper and more in love with each other as time goes on.
However, due to some rash decisions both of them have made, their relationship has deteriorated. Pressure from work, feelings of inadequacy, issues with both of their families (and other issues), and continual bickering have now taken the joyful romance they once enjoyed and replaced it with extreme stress and emotional drains on both of them. This movie takes an honest look at how just plain old love does not necessarily equate to creating or sustaining a long-term relationship without maturity and understanding. The question is whether Aarav and Chandni will come to a resolution over the things they disagree on and stay together, or will they ultimately be separated forever?
Positive Points
Vivek Soni has done a wonderful job of showing the confusion and emotional disconnection that is a part of all modern relationships. The dialogue sounds real and has meaning. Lakshya gave an incredible display. He is bound to be a star. The emotional scenes have a strong and believable presence from him. One can tell that actress Ananya Panday has improved with every film she has made as seen by her performance during these emotional scenes. The chemistry these two actors have is very captivating and allows the audience to stay interested in all the scenes of the film.
Negative Points
During the last part of this movie there is some aspect of the pacing dropping off. Due to this difference in speed of these scenes there were times where there appears to be ways to reduce or cut the length of certain scenes where more emotion is used in place of action to maintain the same pacing. In addition, Ananya has had some difficulty with the emotional scenes, which also affects your perception of these scenes in those moments.
Overall: Chand Mera Dil isn’t your traditional fairytale/romantic movie — it shows love in all of its unfiltered, chaotic, and genuine states. Because of how it portrays the realities of love, including developing emotional maturity, feeling insecure, and doing the hard work to maintain a committed relationship with someone you love, this movie will enter history as a highly relatable, realistic representation of a typical Gen Z romance.
