Daadi Ki Shaadi: Neetu Kapoor, Kapil Sharma And Riddhima Kapoor Struggle In Overdramatic Family Chaos
The use of movies to depict family relationships has become a powerful tool for communicating the commonality of human emotion; that is, the love and the complicated nature of our relationships . Some examples include: experiencing loneliness and social disconnect in your later years; feeling alienated between your children; having a family member feel as if he/she is left out of a family's emotional experience. The commonality of these feelings will allow viewers to connect emotionally with the film's story. A prime example of narrative style used in stand-up cross over is 'Daadi Ki Shaadi', which tells an experience based on loving relationships using humour & sincerity.
Storyline
The film revolves around Vimala (Neetu Kapoor), an elderly lady who lives alone in Shimla while her children are all engrossed in their individual lives across diverse cities and countries. Her two sons, Jeevan and Nag, both have their own immediate families to care for, while her daughter Sunaina has moved permanently overseas. Simultaneously, Tony Kalra (Kapil Sharma), a man searching for the right woman to marry, reconnects with his old college crush, Kannu (Sadia Khateeb). What appears to be developing nicely for the couple abruptly changes due to a shocking turn of events.
The original content contains a lot of spelling & grammatical mistakes and incorrect word usage. This can be addressed through proper editing, however it will alter the structure of many sentences and how they read. An occurrence on a social media platform that leads to a minor error from the member creates confusion within the family and leads to total chaos. With this sudden influx of children returning to Shimla, they bring new hope and life into Vimala's lonely home. With the intent of keeping her family together, she becomes entangled in a web of lies, emotional manipulation and never-ending family drama; ultimately resulting in a downward spiral out of control.
Positive Points
- Neetu Kapoor delivery of an authentic performance filled with vulnerability and warmth in her portrayal of Vimala. Her ability to convey the emotional aspects of this film provides the film's strongest foundation.
- The film's camera work helps elevate the film to another level visually and therefore has an aesthetic that is not only amazing but also very different than anything else you have seen before.
- Many of the stunning views of Shimla's scenic beauty (Ridge Ground, Jakhoo Temple, Mall Road), are huge contributors to this film's overall aesthetic. R. Sarathkumar delivers an exceptional performance with his calm and assertive on-screen presence.
- The central theme of the film reflects the emotional and relatable experience of parents who find themselves neglected by their children.
Negative Points
- The screenplay is too weak for a commercially successful motion picture. The story has excessive amounts of twists and turns every few minutes, which contributes to the feeling of an overwhelming and redundant storyline.
- In many instances where there should naturally be an emotional buildup, the film forces melodrama into every scene.
- Kapil Sharma's ability to deliver great comic timing is very apparent in this film, but when it comes to acting out the more serious parts of the movie he really falls short. The score was also unmemorable.
Overall: Daadi Ki Shaadi has some great messages about family and some touching scenes but fails to be a real family movie because of the amount of drama present and how inconsistent the script is throughout the course of the film. I think it would be better viewed as a light-hearted film to kill time instead of having a good memory of being a dramatic film.
