Met Gala 2026: Ananya Birla Stuns In Bold Indian-Inspired Couture With Artistic Statement Headpiece
At the Met Gala, there has been a transition from fashion only to creating a platform to tell stories through a range of styles created using couture. The 2026 theme of ‘Costume Art,’ with a dress code of ‘Fashion Is Art,’ gave celebrities the chance to go beyond what they had done before. Ananya Birla was making her debut to the gala; the look she provided was not only visually impressive but also had roots in the heritage of India.
Ananya Birla’s Met Gala look at 2026 was special for its concept as well as its cultural narrative. She wore a made-to-measure, custom-made look created by Robert Wun. The jacket was of a neatly fitted blazer style and made from a mixture of silk, wool and cotton. The way in which the fitted jacket created the fitted body shape with a peplum, gave it a newfound appearance as if she were wearing body armour. The pleats at the waistline and hemline of the fusible glass organza produced a beautiful draping effect that allowed the skirt to flow gently down each side of her leg, as well as the illumination of light off the organza for an even balance between power and elegance.
The most visually striking item within her ensemble, in terms of contemporary fashion talk was without a doubt her avant-garde headpiece, created by famous sculptor Subodh Gupta with help from designer Robert Wun and made from stainless steel and acrylic material resembling sculptural interpretations of elements associated with traditional Indian cooking utensils such as large sized saucers, large sized bowls, small size ladles, tongs used for picking up hot items, and other utensils used to prepare food.
Both Subodh Gupta (an artist who is famous for taking commonplace items and giving them a new identity as pieces of global art) and Robert Wun (who is an up-and-coming designer from Hong Kong) were able to create work that reflects the spirit of Indian culture and celebrates the dynamic nature of how we use ordinary kitchen utensils from our daily lives as vehicles for global artistic expression. The headpiece symbolizes that simple domestic utensils can be transformed into strong forms of global artistic expressions.
Ananya was styled by Rhea Kapoor in simple but balanced, chic ways. Each accessory she wore was also well balanced and incorporated some drama, and Ananya chose to wear her personal jewellery which kept it from taking away from the rest of her look or her headpiece. Ananya’s make-up was done by Loveleen Ramchandani and was very minimal and kept with the clean aesthetic of her overall look. Ananya’s hair was styled by Marissa Marino and was done in a very sleek fashion. All of Ananya's looks were shot by Rafael Pavarotti and helped transition into fashion photography very easily.
