He-man And The Masters Of The Universe Review: Reboot Struggles With Tone Despite Epic Fantasy Action Elements
The live-action version of Masters of the Universe premiered last week in Los Angeles and has received great praise for attendance for the first days of on-site previews. The film was directed by Travis Knight. The story combines an extravagant setting with unique character arcs combined with great action sequences. Fans of the cartoon from the 1980s will probably have some reason to celebrate with this film. Both nostalghia and amazement are successfully combined with advanced special effects and best-use of cinematic techniques found today. Vincent Price’s screen debut as Prince Adam/Fedick will provide fans with plenty to look forward to when they view this latest version of Masters of the Universe.
Storyline
Following the events of the previous Film, The Story of Prince Adam; He-Man has led somewhat of a "normal" life up until this point. He has been living outside of Eternia for most of His life; only visiting His mother, Queen Marlena, every now and again. All of this time spent living as an outsider has left Prince Adam wanting to reconnect with His family, which will come to fruition when He discovers the location of the Power Sword and once and for all become worthy of being the true He-Man! At long last, he's back home with his family (and origin) but he faces great challenges because Skeletor now controls their once-great homeland of Eternia. In order to fulfill his destiny as He-Man and help his people free themselves from the darkness, Prince Adam must battle out against evil and save the realm that he loves. This fantasy/adventure film is a fun, emotional, and action-filled representation of a classic hero’s journey.
Positive Points
Nicholas Galitzine to play the roles of Prince Adam/He-Man he was praised for his excellent sense of humour; good physicality; and ability to convey emotion through his performance. Travis Knight also received accolades as the film's director because of his innovation in using the whimsical/fantastical aspects seen in the original cartoon to create a modernised (in order to reach a modern day audience) visual sense. The understanding of the film's special effects/action as "vibrant and energetic" and the production design as "lively and colourfully designed".
Negative Points
There isn't a sense of pacing or tone within the film's first half (for instance, there are awkward transitions between scenes meant to be of an emotional nature to those meant to be of a comedic nature). There have been some reviewers who made mention of the film's pacing and many of them also mentioned that the storytelling needs work in certain areas of the film itself.
Overall: Masters of the Universe may be one of the biggest surprises in Fantasy Cinema for 2026. Strong performances, Nostalgic elements, Exhilarating action and Stunning visuals will make this a film that appeals not just to the Core Fans but brand new audiences as well. There are some flaws in the Film; however, These early reactions indicate that He-Man's return to the big-screen will provide viewers with an enjoyable and exciting experience.
