Netflix presents The Wonderfools, a new South Korean drama series, featuring fantasy, comedy, action, and drama in one fantastically silly adventure superhero theme. Yoo In-sik (who has collaborated with Park Eun-bin in the past on the previous project, 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo') is directing this interesting story of ordinary/non-famous people and their development of super-human abilities. Stars include Park Eun-bin, Cha-Eun Woo, Im Seong-jae, and Choi Dae-hoon.

Storyline

The Wonderfools takes place during a time that very few people have had the privilege to witness, the year of 1999 in a fictional city known as Haeseong-si. Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun-bin), is a 24-year-old woman suffering from an incurable ailment — her heart is going to give out at any moment. The one thing that Chae-ni wants to do before her heart gives out is to travel. To do that, she has teamed up with two outcast friends (Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun). They decide to fake a kidnapping and extort money from Chae-ni's very rich grandmother.

Things go awry quickly once the plan starts to unfold, and tragically, Chae-ni dies during the scheme. After being dumped in a lake, that is currently polluted due to illegal dumping by factories, and believing that she is dead, she actually comes back to life. In addition to coming back to life, Chae-ni also acquired supernatural powers. After being exposed to the same illegal dumping as Chae-ni, Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun also acquired supernatural powers.

Lee Un-jeong (Cha Eun-woo), a mysterious worker in a city hall who also shares an intriguing past associated with the orphanage's sad history where Chae-ni was raised, is drawn into the mystery of three strangers who have inexplicably developed their own superhuman abilities. In learning how to control their powers, the trio learns of a malevolent scheme involving a secret society of superhuman beings and a dark cult trying to destroy the world.

Positive Points

Park Eun-bin's performance as Chae-ni contributes to the overall vibrancy of The Wonderfools through her comedic or dramatic chops alone. Coupled with how deeply Cha Eun-woo can connect with his character while still providing an equal level of intrigue and charm via his calm demeanor, this further increases the mystery surrounding his character.

As viewers, we are consistently kept on our toes guessing how each plot will unfold due to the fact that there are so many different genres within the series, and therefore there are so many different outcomes within the show; for example, a scene could change from comedic slapstick to family drama to high action in a matter of moments. Thus, all three lead actors have chemistry together, ultimately leading to us feeling an emotional connection with their characters and being invested in their journey.

In addition to the points made above, there are many visually impressive fight scenes throughout the series, while character development in Myeong-hoon, as well as all the other characters throughout the series, especially Myeong-hoon, and his family relationships, are very strong.

Negative Points

The Wonderfools is plagued by pacing issues and tonal inconsistencies. Maybe some scenes may feel like disjointed, the transitions between the comedy, romance, horror and emotional trauma happen very quickly. Even the length of the finale could feel drawn out for some viewers, as well as several plot twists maybe feel predictable.

Overall: The Wonderfools doesn’t reinvent the superhero genre, the series has lovable characters and emotional moments and Park Eun-bin gives a outstanding performance. If you are a quirky fantasy dramas lover or like emotional stories about superheroes, you will likely find this series highly entertaining from beginning to end.
