Perfect Crown Review: IU Shines In Royal Drama With Intrigue, Romance, But Familiar K-Drama Tropes
Perfect Crown's first teaser gives a taste of K-drama's distinct visuals and heavy emotional elements. The series incorporates fantasy elements into real and current ambitions through royal themes and expands the possibilities for future K-dramas. Perfect Crown will be available on Disney+ with the full backing of Disney.
The audience's interest in this series is already built up by the uniquely formulated story of a new 21st-century form of government that has never before been seen anywhere else — a mix between constitutional monarchy with democracy. Based on the star-studded cast of this series, including IU and Byeon Woo-seok, their excitement will only increase until the day they can watch the show. The teaser really helps to create buzz about when this series will officially begin.
Storyline
Hee-Ju (IU) is part of a chaebol family and is the most ambitious and second daughter of the family. She has everything she needs to be successful: she's a beautiful, smart woman who comes from wealth, but the one major impediment to her success is her non-royalty status in a society that has been heavily affected by its history of monarchy.
Hee-Ju begins a relationship with Prince Yian (Byeon Woo-seok), who is the King’s second son. Their love story becomes the main conflict in the show as neither of them fully embodies the power associated with being royalty. This power struggle will lead to both children experiencing personal crises and problems related to their love and desire for success.
Positive Points
Certain aspects of the teaser are positive. The biggest strength of the teaser is its concept, which combines the power of modern corporations with royal politics. IU seems perfectly cast, as a complex character who has ambitions but is also vulnerable. Byeon Woo-seok's character as Prince YiAn has a subtle charisma that appears to lend itself to an intriguing character development arc.Peering through the lens of being an ex-princess, Park Kyu-sung provides a truly stunning visual appeal and wealth of costuming to complement each other with great care. Although the leads have exhibited only a limited amount of time together on-screen thus far, their established chemistry displays a high probability of producing substantial success. The direction by Park Joon-hwa leads me to believe that the story will be well crafted and emotionally deep.
Negative Points
However, there are also concerns about the teaser . While this idea seems promising, it seems like there are a lot of common K-drama characteristics which will lead to an overly predictable story (unless they add something unique). This teaser places a heavy emphasis on the look and design; thus, I am not sure what type of story it will develop into or how complete the supporting characters will be. My biggest concern for this series is that it becomes too melodramatic like many of the other series in this particular genre have before.
Verdict: Perfect Crown has a good chance to be an interesting mixture of romance, politics and ambition. It may use some common storytelling elements; however, it has an interesting setting and strong performances that may give it an edge.
